OVERVIEW

Learn about the politics, economy, society, art and educational system in Germany as you join Professor Adelheid Deren and Penn State York Students and visit Nuremberg, Eisenach, Weimar and Berlin.

Family and/or friends of Penn State students, faculty and employees are welcome on our trips!

ITINERARY

DAY 1 MONDAY MAY 18 DEPARTURE

Depart from Philadelphia International airport for Nuremberg, Germany via Paris with Air France. Flight AF 365 leaves at 6:40 PM from Philadelphia. Check-in should be around 4:00 PM. Arrive in Nuremberg at 11:30 AM on Tuesday.

DAY 2 TUESDAY MAY 19 NUREMBERG

Guided city tour and free time for leisure. Overnight at Youth Hostel Nuremberg.

DAY 3 WEDNESDAY MAY 20 NUREMBERG

Morning tour of the "Documenta" including a presentation by the Department of Education. Topic: Hitler and Nuremberg. Afternoon tour of Sebalduskirche and Lorenzkirche. Topics: The Great Masters of Nuremberg, Destruction During the War Years. Dinner. Overnight at Youth Hostel Nuremberg.

DAY 4 THURSDAY MAY 21 EISENACH

Morning tour of Albrecht Durer House. Transfer to Eisenach by train (2nd Class seats). Overnight at Youth Hostel Artur Becker.

DAY 5 FRIDAY MAY 22 EISENACH

Morning guided tour of Wartburg Castle. Afternoon presentation at the Bach Museum followed by a Luther dinner at the Eisenacher Hof. Overnight at Youth Hostel Artur Becker.

DAY 6 SATURDAY MAY 23 EISENACH

Orientation tour of Weimar. Guided tour of Buchenwald Concentration Camp including discussion session. Overnight at Youth Hostel Artur Becker.

DAY 7 SUNDAY MAY 24 BERLIN

Morning transfer to Berlin by train (2nd Class seats). Presentation at Kaethe Kollwitz Museum. Topic: Issues of the Current Administration, Symbolism of the Reichstag. Orientation tour by public transportation - 'Berlin by Night'. Overnight at Hotel Agon Alexanderplatz.

DAY 8 MONDAY MAY 25 BERLIN

Morning guided tour of the Reichstag including discussion session. Topics: Issues of the Current Administration, Symbolism of the Reichstag. Afternoon guided tour of German History Museum including discussion session. Topic: Germany's Development into a Democratic Nation State. Overnight at Hotel Agon Alexanderplatz.

DAY 9 TUESDAY MAY 26 BERLIN

Guided tour of Stasi Museum including lecture. Topic: Guard Your Freedoms! Dinner. Overnight at Hotel Agon Alexanderplatz.

DAY 10 WEDNESDAY MAY 27 BERLIN

Guided tour of Pergammon Museum including lecture. Overnight at Hotel Agon Alexanderplatz.

DAY 11 THURSDAY MAY 28 RETURN

Return to Philadelphia via Paris. Flight AF 1435 leaves at 9:55 AM and arrives Philadelphia at 3:50 PM.

This price includes:

  • Round trip flights from Philadelphia to Nuremberg and return from Berlin with Air France
  • Airport security taxes and 'Q' tax (fuel surcharge) at $ 306.00
    (subject to adjustment at time of ticketing)

  • Single room supplement.

Everyone needs a passport valid until November 28, 2009. If you are not an American citizen, a visa may be required. Please check and arrange this well ahead of the tour departure date.

A green card is compulsory for returning to the US.

COURSE REGISTRATION

A Penn State 3-credit independent study course, i.e. not requiring regular attendance at York campus, is offered. The course is listed with the PSU International Studies trips as German 200. Approved full time students at all Penn State campuses are eligible to take the course at no additional cost.

To establish eligibility at any Penn State campus, the student should obtain his/her adviser's permission to register then receive the confirmation of approval from the York DAA and from the teacher of the course. The courses may also be taken by non-Penn State students for transfer-credit or by Penn State students, who are not enrolled in a full time status. But in those cases the applicable tuition fee will apply.

Cancellation:
All cancellations must be received in writing. In case of cancellation the following penalties will apply:

  • $150.00 processing fee will apply upon receipt of the written cancellation notice.
  • Penalty of 50% of the cost of the trip if written cancellation is received between March 19 and April 15, 2009.
  • Penalty of 100% of the cost of the trip if written cancellation is received after April 15, 2009 or for no show

TRAVEL INSURANCE

We strongly recommend that you avail yourself of travel insurance as protection against penalties as well as baggage damage and travel delays. Without insurance, if you cancel your trip within a few days of the departure date, the total value of the trip will not be refunded. Pre-existing medical conditions are covered only if the insurance registration has been submitted within 14 days of sending your deposit.

Travel documents will be sent to Penn State College and delivered by your professor. If your documents have to be sent individually, you must submit your request with your address in writing. A $20.00 administration, handling and mailing fee will apply.
