OVERVIEW

China is a complex nation with 20% of the world's population and an ever-growing role in worldwide globalization. We need to understand this not-so-sleeping giant. This course will provide an introduction to the history, economy and political culture of this very influential country.

 

ITINERARY

Itinerary and all visits are subject to change without notice. Adjustments to the itinerary depends on the final reconfirmation of the corporate visits.

DAY 1 FRIDAY MAR 5 DEPARTURE
Depart from Newark airport with Continental Airlines flight CO #87 leaving at 11:10 AM. Check-in should be 3 hours prior to departure.
DAY 2 SATURDAY MAR 6 SHANGHAI
Arrive in Shanghai at 2:55 PM. Local transport and assistance to go to hotel Express by Holiday Inn Putuo. Check-in at hotel for 4 nights. Remainder of the day for rest.
DAY 3 SUNDAY MAR 7 SHANGHAI
Morning sightseeing (6 hours) - Visit the Bund. Entrance to Pudong New Development Area. Entrance to Yu Garden. Visit to Old Street. Entrance to Jade Buddha Temple. Afternoon at leisure.
DAY 4 MONDAY MAR 8 SHANGHAI
Transport and assistant at disposal for professional visit (4 hours). Visit to Bao Steel Factory (subject to final confirmation) including meeting. Afternoon at leisure.
DAY 5 TUESDAY MAR 9 SHANGHAI
Transport and assistant at disposal for professional visit (4 hours). Visit to Yangshan Deep Water Port including meeting (subject to final confirmation). Afternoon at leisure.
DAY 6 WEDNESDAY MAR 10 SHANGHAI/XIAN
Transfer and assistance to go to the Pudong airport. Flight to Xian - Assistance and transport. Half day guided excursion to visit the Terracotta Army. Entrance to Shaanxi History Museum. Entrance to Museum of Terracotta warriors and Bronze Chariots & Horses. Entrance to movie. Overnight at Hotel New World in Xian.
DAY 7 THURSDAY MAR 11 XIAN/BEIJING
Assistance and transportation. Visit to either Coca Cola Xian Company or to Simo Motor Inc. including meeting (subject to final confirmation). Flight to Beijing - Transfers & assistance. Check-in at Hotel Dong Fang for 3 nights
DAY 8 FRIDAY MAR 12 BEIJING

Full day assistance & transportation (11 hours) at disposal. 2 corporate visits to be confirmed including meetings. These visits could be either at the Beijing Hyundai Automobile Co., Dragon Seal Wine Factory, Shou Gang Steel Group, Beijing Enamel Factory or smilar small or large corporations.

7:30PM: Side stall tickets for Shaolin Kung Fu show.

DAY 9 SATURDAY MAR 13 BEIJING
Transport and guide for full day sightseeing (11 hours). Great Wall half day excursion. Entrance and cable car are included. In the afternoon, visit Tian'Anmen Square and the Forbidden City. Meeting local family and dinner together.
DAY 10 SUNDAY MAR 14 RETURN
Transportation and guide services (5 hours) for morning sightseeing prior to going to the airport. Entrance to Summer Palace and the Confucian Temple Complex. Transfer to airport for your return flight to Newark with Continental Airlines flight CO # 88 leaving at 4:00PM and arriving Newark at 5:35PM.

* Passport and visa Everyone needs a passport valid until March 15, 2011. A visa is required for all American citizens. It will be easier to get your visa processed through a visa company.

Do not wait for the last minute. Visa processing may take several weeks depending on your country of origin. A Green Card is compulsory if you are not an American citizen.

COURSE REGISTRATION

Students planning to register for course credit should take the following steps to enroll:


1) Meet with your academic advisor to discuss how this course will impact your educational progress. If you determine that you will be taking the course for academic credit, have your advisor sign a drop/add form to add this class. Forms are available in C216 Olmsted.


2) Contact the travel agency to pay the deposit or total cost for the trip and obtain a receipt from the travel agency showing you have paid the deposit or cost of the trip.


3) Bring your signed drop/add form and your travel agency receipt, Registrar’s Office in Swatara Building to enroll in the course.


Course requirements will include mandatory pre-departure meetings during spring term, group reading, journals, and a final project to be turned in after return


Registration for the trip through Celestial Voyagers is necessary by December 4, 2009.

After December 4, space may be available but a supplement and/or penalties may apply.


If you are an undergraduate honors student, there is scholarship money available through the honors program at Penn State Harrisburg. Please contact Dr. Sims for honors funding. In addition, the University has money for students traveling internationally.

PAYMENT (TERMS & CONDITIONS)

Celestial Voyagers’ terms relate to contracts with airlines, hotels and other suppliers. The regulations below must be strictly enforced as they are related to these contracts.

 

Deposit $500 .00 due upon registration and before December4, 2009


Balance due no later than January 3, 2010

 

After December 4, full payment is due with registration

All check payments to be made out to Celestial Voyagers escrow account. Your deposit secures your reservation with the airline, the hotel and other suppliers. It must be sent with a copy of your passport and the registration form.


Credit card payments:
We accept Visa and MasterCard. Since Merchant fees are not included in the package price, a 3.5% supplement applies should you wish to pay by credit card.

 

Cancellation:
All cancellations must be received in writing. The following penalties apply:

* $150.00 non-refundable processing fee

* $150.00 additional (total $300.00) if written cancellation is received between  Nov 6 - Dec 4, 2009

* Penalty of 50% of the total trip cost if cancellation is received between Dec 5 and Jan 14, 2010

* Penalty of 100% of the total trip cost if cancellation is received on or after January 15, 2010 and in case of a no-show.

 

These policies will be strictly applied.

 

TRANSFERS CAMPUS/AIRPORT/CAMPUS

Transfers between Penn State Harrisburg Campus and international departure airports such as Newark,
Philadelphia, Baltimore, Washington Reagan, Washington Dulles or JFK are always included in our tour price if the group has 25 passengers or more.


Should the group be smaller than 25, either you will be responsible for transportation or the Office of
International Programs will charge you for a charter bus service to the airport. You will be notified if a
charter service is planned and what the supplement will be.

 

TRAVEL INSURANCE

All travelers on Penn State programs are required to purchase travel insurance through HTH Worldwide. Students will be sent enrollment information 2 weeks prior to departure. Non-students must purchase TravelGap or TripProtector from http://www.hthtravelinsurance.com.

Travel documents will be sent to Penn State College and delivered by your professor.

 

If your documents have to be sent directly to you, you must submit your request for this service in writing and supply your address. Somebody will need to be home to sign for the package and a $20.00 administration, handling and mailing fee applies.
