COURSE DESCRIPTION
ENGLISH 184: The Short Story, Pamela Main
English 184 is an introductory course in reading and responding to the short story. For this international travel course, the focus is on writers from Peru and South America, writers whose native language is Spanish, though we will read English translations of the stories. English 184 aims to give you an enjoyable and meaningful introduction to the short fiction of these writers, about their fictional worlds and about the memorable ways stories can greatly enrich our understanding of many facets of human nature. The stories for this course will introduce you to aspects of the culture of Peru and of other South American writers. The course will involve study of the elements of fiction, critical reading, and methods for writing papers about literary works.
Introduction to the Arts in Peru , Dr. Paul D. Greene
Welcome to the exciting worlds of the arts in Peru. In this course, we will explore means of expression and communication that involve sound, space, color, and shape. We will reflect on and carefully analyze what is being communicated through these media. We will learn and use aesthetic terminology which will function as our tools to discuss the arts, and we will learn to consider artworks within a framework of Peruvian art history.
This is an experience-based course in the arts. This means that the approach of the course is to open the arts up to students through direct experience. Immediate aesthetic encounters with visual art, architecture, music, theatre, and so on is the foundation of the course, and history, scholarly criticism, and cultural background information serve to deepen and frame direct experiences. Pre-trip readings and assignments are intended to introduce the cultural setting and its artistic heritage, to stimulate aesthetic curiosity, and to help students frame questions which they can explore in Peru. Direct aesthetic experiences are documented through journaling, and these experiences are further deepened and extended through post-trip research and analysis on the specific artworks experienced. Students will reflect on how travel and immersion in Peruvian culture has transformed their understanding of the arts.
This course does not require a prior artistic background, nor advanced skills in music-making, drawing, or acting. Instead, it is an introduction to the arts that targets your ability to consider and verbally discuss what meanings and functions an artwork takes on in our lives, and how it relates to other artworks in aesthetic traditions in South America. The course will not tell you what is "good" or "bad" art, but instead invite you to decide this for yourself, in relation to artistic traditions that have been cultivated over the centuries.
SPANISH 131-IBERO AMERICAN CIVILIZATION, Sandra Maria Lawrence
This course is designed to prepare students to learn and experience the Peruvian life from conquest to the present; literature, art, and the indigenous heritage and contemporary problem. The course will focus on, from a critical perspective, the most important cultural, historical and artistic processes that characterize Peruvian society, with particular focus on the cities of Lima and Cuzco. This course will help students become more sensitive to cultural differences and more accepting of them, which leads to a better understanding of their own culture. Solid preparation will enhance the international tour and help to provide a truly memorable experience
CNED 298 (3 credits) Special Topics: Leadership: A Comparative Approach,
Matthew R. Shupp, Ed.D., NCC, DCC
Welcome to Penn State Brandywine's International Studies program! You are invited to join and build our traveling community as we explore PERU. As part of your travel experience, you will be required not only to work with your me to complete the assignments specified in the syllabus, but also to contribute to your traveling community as we all work together to make the most of our shared intellectual experience.
Believing that leaders are made and not born, and that leadership crosses boundaries and borders, this course (while experiential on purpose) is designed to introduce students to those key components (behaviors and characteristics) that have been found to be integral to successful leadership. The quotes above serve as a backdrop for the purpose of this course.
Knowledge of leadership theory as well as self-assessment and development is a necessary and continual process for leaders. Students will be asked to examine their own strengths and weaknesses and to begin to make adjustments in their behaviors and attitudes as they experience and examine individuals and organizations that may be, at times, significantly different from their own life experience. Students will be asked to constantly compare and contrast their leadership style with others, using self-reflection, class discussions, and travel experiences as their compass.
The course will require independent work by each student. Portions of the course will occur online prior to our departure to PERU. The readings and assignments will prepare students for their travel abroad experience in PERU. Following the study abroad experience students will write a comparative leadership paper analyzing the experience using one of several leadership theories discussed in the course.
