Penn State Abington is committed to providing you with meaningful opportunities to study abroad.

In this course, you will study organizational communication from a global perspective — the perspective of one of our largest trading partners, Japan.
Japan has the third largest national economy in the world and a close relationship with the United States.

You will experience the country’s unique overall history and culture, epitomized by visits to cultural sites in Nagasaki. In addition, you will visit international organizations in Fukuoka and Tokyo, some of which have a predominantly Japanese culture, and some of which have a predominantly Western culture. You will also have the opportunity to explore Tokyo, a top-tier international city with a blend of cultural influences.

This course includes seminars with Japanese students on the campus of Seinan Gakuin University in Fukuoka, where you will experience a contemporary Japanese university firsthand while conversing with bilingual (Japanese – and English speaking) faculty and students.

Topics of Study

  • Historical, contemporary, and future contexts of organizing
  • Major perspectives on and methods for analyzing organizations
  • Processes, strategies, and skills for effectively communicating in organizations
  • The importance of culture for understanding and successfully functioning in organizations
  • Identifying and designing opportunities for positive organizational change

Notes

Expenses

International program costs, estimated at $2,500 (subject to change), are separate from Penn State costs for tuition for the spring 2018 semester. A $500 nonrefundable deposit is due to hold your place in the program, with the remaining balance spread over two additional payments to the travel
agency. Grants and scholarship monies may be retroactively available through Penn State University. Underwriting for each program is provided by Penn State Abington to maximize opportunities for our students to study abroad. Program costs include round-trip airfare, local ground transportation,
lodging, and some, but not all, meals.

A valid passport is required for international travel. Non-U.S. citizens may require a visa in addition to their passport. Non-U.S. citizens should consult their embassy for information.

What is an Embedded Course?

Traditionally, “study abroad” meant that students spent a semester in another country and attended classes at an accredited university. Short-term, faculty-led courses with an international travel component are viable alternatives as they offer solid academic international experiences at a reasonable cost with a reduced time commitment.Students who are enrolled in a course with an international travel component are taking an internationally focused class while being enrolled during the same semester. These programs are “anchored” on Penn State Abington’s campus at the beginning and the end of the course. Course material and lectures prepare students both academically and culturally for the short international excursion to the country of focus in the program. The goal of the courses with an international travel component is to embed the students into the life and culture of the university and the country they visit. Therefore, including international faculty and students at the host institution in academic and cultural activities is highly regarded.
