Spanish is the second most widely spoken language in the world. Predictions show that it will surpass English as the most important language in international commerce within the current century — solidifying its status in today’s world and beyond.
This course, Spanish Language, Literature, and Culture, builds upon the basic communication skills mastered in Spanish I and features a required international travel component in Salamanca, Spain.
Surrounded by mountains and situated to the north of the Tormes River, Salamanca is located in midwest Spain in the province of Castile y Leon — a two to three-hour drive from Madrid. The town’s historic architecture immerses you in another time while also serving as one of the most famous university towns in Europe — creating a vibrant mix of the ancient and the modern.

Objectives

You will study the Spanish language first-hand through communication—speaking (oral comprehension), listening, reading, and writing.
In addition, you will acquire a general knowledge of Spanish society and behavior via the study of:

  • Literary works of several Spanish authors
  • Historical events that have influenced Spain
  • Spanish culture, via an overview of the civilization—from its origins to present—as well as art forms that appeared throughout the history of Spain
  • Commercial contexts, including the sociocultural environment present in modern Spain and international relations.

Notes

Expenses

International program costs, estimated at $2,800– $3,000 (subject to change), are separate from Penn State costs for tuition for the spring 2018 semester. A $500 nonrefundable deposit is due to hold your place in the program, with the remaining balance spread over two additional payments to the travel agency. Grants and scholarship monies may be retroactively available through Penn State University. Underwriting for each program is provided by Penn State Abington to maximize opportunities for our students to study abroad. Program costs include round-trip airfare, local ground transportation, lodging, and meals, as well as an overnight stay and sightseeing in Madrid.

A valid passport is required for international travel. Non-U.S. citizens may require a visa in addition to their passport. Non-U.S. citizens should consult their embassy for information.

What is an Embedded Course?

Traditionally, “study abroad” meant that students spent a semester in another country and attended classes at an accredited university. Short-term, faculty-led courses with an international travel component are viable alternatives as they offer solid academic international experiences at a reasonable cost with a reduced time commitment.

Students who are enrolled in a course with an international travel component are taking an internationally focused class while being enrolled during the same semester. These programs are “anchored” on Penn State Abington’s campus at the beginning and the end of the course. Course material and lectures prepare students both academically and culturally for the short international excursion to the country of focus in the program.

The goal of the courses with an international travel component is to embed the students into the life and culture of the university and the country they visit. Therefore, including international faculty and students at the host institution in academic and cultural activities is highly regarded.
