Mission Statement

Penn State Abington is committed to providing you with meaningful opportunities to study abroad.
Exposure to other cultures is a vital step toward becoming a global citizen.

Tour Details

The graphic novel is one of the most powerful, unique, current, and ageless means of storytelling.
This course, The Graphic Novel in Scotland, will give you hands-on practical experience and the opportunity to explore wide-ranging techniques for translating your own life experiences and imagination into compelling visual narratives and sequential art. You will be exposed to the work of some of the best graphic novel artists working today.
You will partner with students at the University of Dundee — who are majoring in the study of graphic novels — to develop story lines, featuring locations in both the United States and Scotland, collaboratively. You will visit these locations during your study abroad experience, and work on your characters side by side with Dundee students.

Registration

Priority registration in this course is given to Abington students enrolled in an Art major or minor, as well as students with a GPA of 3.0 or higher.

Objectives

  • Transform personal experience and imaginative storytelling into compelling visual narrative
  • Become familiar with the diverse stylistic forms of graphic memoir
  • Gain important international experience by navigating through a different country and through direct interaction with Dundee students
  • Develop a collaborative international narrative

Notes

Expenses

International program costs, estimated at $2,000 (subject to change), are separate from Penn State costs for tuition for the spring 2018 semester. A $500 nonrefundable deposit is due to hold your place in the program, with the remaining balance spread over two additional payments to the travel agency. Grants and scholarship monies may be retroactively available through Penn State University. Underwriting for each program is provided by Penn State Abington to maximize opportunities for our students to study abroad. Program costs include round-trip airfare, local ground transportation, lodging, and meals. A valid passport is required for international travel. Non-U.S. citizens may require a visa in addition to their passport. Non-U.S. citizens should consult their embassy for information.

What is an Embedded Course?

Traditionally, “study abroad” meant that students spent a semester in another country and attended classes at an accredited university. Short-term, faculty-led courses with an international travel component are viable alternatives as they offer solid academic international experiences at a reasonable cost with a reduced time commitment. Students who are enrolled in a course with an international travel component are taking an internationally focused class while being enrolled during the same semester. These programs ar “anchored” on Penn State Abington’s campus at the beginning and the end of the course. Course material and lectures prepare students both academically and culturally for the short international excursion to the country of focus in the program. The goal of the courses with an international trave  component is to embed the students into the life and culture of the university and the country they visit. Therefore, including international faculty and students at the host institution in academic and cultural activities is highly regarded.
