The Caño Cristales river has its source at Serranía de la Macarena National Park, several hundred kilometers south of Bogotá. Always after the rainy season, between July and November, and when the sun shines, the flowering of the water nymph let the crystal clear water glowing in all rainbow colours. This unique experience combined with a biodiversity that occurs only here makes the National Park a very special place in the world.

Early morning transfer to the airport. Get a 1-hour charter flight to the village of La Macarena. After check-in at your hotel you will make a short walk to the Guayabero River to take a Donut canoe for a 20 minutes ride to enjoying the scenery (birds, turtles & other animals of the region). Following you will be transferred in 4X4 vehicles to the spring of “Cajuche”. After a walking tour through rough stones, small rivers, wide savanna and dense jungle (rain or sunshine will always be with you, be prepared to be wet) you finally reach Caño Cristales – a really stunning experience. Between July and December, the colors of the river changes into yellow, green, blue and red, caused by an endemic underwater plant called “Macarenia clavigera” on the bottom of the river. After a refreshing bath in the river unwrap your lunch, packed in banana leaves and enjoy the scenery. Walk back to the meeting point to catch the vehicle and boat back to the village. An eventful day comes to an end. At night, when you enjoy your dinner, young people of the region will entertain you with typical music and dances. Dinner and overnight at your hotel.

After an early breakfast you will leave the village by boat across the Guayabero river to reach the landing point, where the 4×4 vehicles will bring you again to the spring of Cajuche“. Today you will walk to the further away located attractions of the river. Crossing rivers from knee- till shoulder height in the dense jungle will make you feel like one of the first explorers. Walk along the stony riverbed and reach one of the many waterfalls. Take a refreshing bath in this spectacular scenery. Learn about the different plants and enjoy the five colors of the river which are even more intense when the sun shines. After lunch walk back to the meeting point for your transfer to the village. Dinner and overnight at your hotel.

Morning boat ride on the Guayabero river to reach an oasis for birds, turtles and monkeys. You will have the opportunity to observe the animals while the boat is gliding slowly along the shore. For nature lovers it is an overwhelming experience. After lunch you will be transferred to the airport to catch your charter flight back to Bogotá for individual homebound flight or extension programs.
